Birmingham City were still being kept waiting last night in their longrunning pursuit of Walter Pandiani, writes Ged Scott.

The six-month saga of Blues' attempt to sign the Uruguayan striker had been expected to end yesterday following his return to Britain.

But reports that a £2.8 million transfer has been completed have proved premature, although sources within the club suggest that Blues remain very hopeful of completing the deal today.

One possible deal involving Blues that looks a lot less likely to happen is oner that involves the potential arrival of Chelsea left-back Wayne Bridge on a season-long loan.

Bridge's future at Chelsea has looked in doubt since their public courting of Ashley Cole made headlines in February. The Premiership champions have brought in another left-back in summer signing Asier Del Horno.

Athough Blues manager Steve Bruce has been in the market for a left- back, Bridge's agent Jonathan Barnett denied his client would be leaving Chelsea. "He's the Chelsea left-back," he said. "And he's going nowhere."

Bridge has not played for Chelsea since February after being crocked by Alan Shearer in an FA Cup tie at Newcastle.
