Sakari Oramo, music director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, will take over at the helm of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra when he steps down in 2008.
Oramo, who succeeded Sir Simon Rattle at the CBSO in 1998, announced in February that he would become chief guest conductor with the CBSO in two years' time. He is also chief conductor of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra.
The appointment, initially for three years, follows an exceptionally successful Nobel Prize concert which Oramo conducted last autumn.
He said: "I have had a long rapport as guest with the Stockholm Philharmonic, and believe that our relationship is built on very strong musical foundations.
"The will enable me to nurture even stronger Scandinavian orchestral identities"
