Just 48 hours after defender Martin Laursen revealed his desire to one day captain Aston Villa, it appears that his manager is of a similiar view.
The current skipper, England midfielder Gareth Barry could be on his way to Liverpool within days and Laursen, along with midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker and fellow centre half Curtis Davies, have been put forward as possible candidates.
All have admitted they would be flattered to do the job with the manager now pinpointing Laursen as a real possibility. A key clue may appear when the team run out to face Swiss side Wil 1900 on Thursday.
O’Neill said: “There are quite a few candidates at the club and perhaps others not yet at the club. Martin Laursen would certainly be one of the names I’d be thinking about. He was terrific last season. That’s something I’ll look at further down the line.”
Barry is not in Switzerland. He was left behind after his comments about O'Neill in a Sunday tabloid angered the manager.
O’Neill and chairman Randy Lerner have said that they will not allow Barry to move to Merseyside for anything less than £18?million. The most likely solution may be for Liverpool to use defender Steve Finnan as a makeweight along with up to £17?million in hard cash.
