Dick Atkinson, one of Birmingham's best known community activists, has been made an OBE.

Dr Atkinson helped found the Balsall Heath Forum and was singled out two years ago by Tory leader David Cameron as a prime example of a successful social entrepreneur.

Under Dr Atkinson's leadership the forum helped transform Balsall Heath, ridding the area of its reputation for prostitution and drug dealing. More recently, he began the Chamberlain series of lectures in which public figures spoke about the importance of community activism.
