Two-time Tory London mayoral candidate Steve Norris yesterday indicated he may "fall on his sword" for party leader David Cameron and not stand again to give a clear run to a candidate from a more diverse background.
Mr Norris stressed he had not yet made up his mind but said he believed that the Conservatives did need to present themselves in a different light to appeal to voters.
The Tories are planning to select their official candidate for the next mayoral election, in 2008, using a US-style primary by the autumn.
"Would I fall on my sword for young Dave? Yeah, actually I probably would, to be honest, because I do want the party to succeed and I am a huge supporter of David Cameron," Mr Norris said on GMTV's Sunday Programme.
