The United States is taking time responding to a mixed message from Iran offering negotiations on its nuclear programme but resisting suspension of uranium enrichment.

US President George Bush at his weekly meeting with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice discussed Tehran's response to a joint offer by the US and European Union for concessions in exchange for a suspension. They made no statement.

Dana Perino, a White House spokeswoman, said the Iranian response was getting careful consideration and review.
