A scheme to stop motorists from speeding in Warwickshire villages has been welcomed by residents.

Since 2002, Warwickshire County Council has been carrying out a systematic review of village speed limits in the region.

The Village Speed Limit Review has considered all villages that do not have a 30mph speed limit and 22 villages have benefited from the review so far including Bidford-on-Avon.

Before the review, residents of the village were plagued by motorists exceeding speed limits on the B50 road.

During the summer, some villages including Bidford-on-Avon will see speed reductions put in place including new 30mph and 40mph limits, an improvement to village gateway signs, road narrowings and vehicle activated signs.

Elizabeth Uggerloese, a Bidford-on-Avon Parish Council spokeswoman, said: "The parish council is very happy.

"As far as I am aware there were not any major issues.

"It was not so much accidents but an increase in traffic.

"It was originally a relief road but it became a through-road with lots of lorries.

"The residents were worried and said it was an accident waiting to happen. The hope is that this will help."

According to Mrs Uggerloese, the residents had been kept up to date about the changing speed limits and were happy to hear there would be speed limit signs at the entry and exit points of the village.

"We held an exhibition at the Bidford-on-Avon parish hall where people could come and look at the proposals and also make suggestions," she said.

"Everyone got a letter telling them about the proposals and were invited to make comments."

The scheme will see works for villages on A-class roads completed and the monitoring of vehicle speeds after the introduction of speed reduction measures.

A review of villages with B-class roads including Cubbington, Gaydon, Gilson, Rowington, Shrewley Common and Withybrook is currently taking place.

The opportunity will also be taken to reduce sign clutter where possible in these villages, removing old and redundant signage, thereby further improving the village environment.

Project leader Katrina Pedlar said: "Public consultation is well underway on the remaining villages on the B-roads and works will be undertaken once public consultation is completed.

"Initial investigation into villages without 30mph speed limits on C-class roads has also commenced.

"As the review progresses, we will be able to give more details about the timescale for dealing with particular places.

"So, we may be coming to a village near you in the future."
