The new head of equalities at Birmingham City Council left his three previous jobs in controversial circumstances.

Mashuq Ally was sacked as director of the South East Wales Race Equality Council in 2003 after an "unsatisfactory probationary period".

Dr Ally, who was appointed head of equalities & diversity at Birmingham City Council in June, also resigned from a job as director of the Welsh Commission for Racial Equality after an internal investigation into his conduct.

He quit his post as head of Wales' race equality body three years ago, before the investigation could be concluded.

Dr Ally denied he had left the position "under a cloud" but the CRE confirmed to The Birmingham Post that he was investigated before his resignation.

He also told The Post his employment history had been assessed by his new bosses, but it had not been an issue.
