Almost 50 schools in Birmingham have been labelled as “outstanding” in the annual report of the Government’s Chief Inspector of schools.

The list, which includes early years providers as well as primary, secondary and special schools, were all awarded an outstanding rating by education watchdogs Ofsted during the past year.

In total, today’s annual report by Chief Inspector Christine Gilbert contains 46 education establishments in Birmingham, 12 in Walsall, ten in Dudley, seven in Solihull, six in Sandwell, five in Wolverhampton, 31 in Staffordshire, eight in Warwickshire, 38 in Worcestershire and seven in Coventry.

They include Calthorpe School and Sports College in Highgate, Birmingham, which was today hosting a visit by Jane Joyner, Ofsted’s Divisional Manager for Curriculum and Dissemination.

Calthorpe, which is one of three Birmingham special schools in the list, alongside 16 primary and ten secondary schools, was described as “trail-blazing” by Ofsted inspectors.

The school, which provides education for 2-19 year old pupils with severe, complex and profound learning difficulties from across the city, holds specialist status in sports, maths and computing, and modern foreign languages.

Ms Joyner, who will be highlighting the outstanding quality of education delivered by the school, said: “I am delighted to congratulate the head teacher, staff, governors and pupils of Calthorpe School and Sports College on their hard work and success in achieving such a high standard of education.”

Christine Gilbert, Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector said: “I see evidence of sustained improvement and I see excellence in the most difficult of circumstances. But across the range of Ofsted’s remit, there remains too much that is mediocre and persistently so.

“ I am clear of the greatest challenge: to raise the quality of the provision that is only satisfactory to the level of good or outstanding.

“I see no reason why every nursery, every school, college, children’s home, all children’s services and indeed, every provider, should not aspire to be good and to be working towards excellence. That’s what gives children and learners, whatever their age, hope and the belief in themselves to succeed.”
