A Birmingham GP has been elected as the new chairman of the Royal College of General Practitioners.

Professor Steve Field, a GP partner at Bellevue Medical Centre in Edgbaston, is the 20th chair to be elected by the RCGP Council and will hold the post three years.

The 48-year-old has a long history with the RCGP and spearheaded the introduction of the first GP training curriculum, which came into force in August.

Prof Field, who is married with two children, is the regional postgraduate dean for NHS West Midlands Workforce Deanery.
