National One: Stourbridge 19 Macclesfield 22
The teacher’s report on Stourbridge’s first day of the new term was the class could – and will – do better.
Director of rugby Neil Mitchell said: “We had 13 debutantes while Macclesfield fielded 80 per cent of the players who won them promotion last year. We gave away a lot of penalties and had two yellow cards leaving us with 13 men, but once we settle I am confident we will go on to bigger and better things.”
Mitchell thinks next week’s visit to Coventry will be a more realistic test.
Most of the damage was done in the first half as Stour, still learning each other’s ways, found themselves 22-19 down but they took the second 12-3 with Macclesfield forced to hang on grimly in the final stages.
For Stour, scrum-half Ollie Frost and back-row James Rodley, with a brace, provided the tries, while fly-half Luke Cozens and Cameron Brown had a conversion apiece.
