More than 1,200 Muslims are to attend a mass camp at the University of Warwick in a bid to tackle claims of radicalisation among British Muslim youth.

The three-day Al Hidayah 2009, which takes place at the Coventry-based university from Saturday to Monday, is described as the UK’s largest annual retreat of young Muslims of its kind. The camp, which features intensive study, will be attended by at least 1,200 mostly young Muslims from around a dozen countries across Europe. The annual event, which has previously been held in Oxfordshire and Shropshire, comes as reports persist of British-born Muslims fighting for the Taliban in Afghanistan. Organisers of Al-Hidayah 2009 said the timing of this weekend’s camp could not be more pertinent in the wake of worrying reports that British Muslims are being radicalised.
