Part of the M6 in the Midlands had to be closed yesterday while a man was talked down from a motorway bridge.

The 37-year-old climbed on to a flyover at junction 10 of the motorway, near Walsall, yesterday morning.

Negotiators were brought in by police to persuade the man not to jump and the motorway was closed between junctions 10 and 11.

The man was later arrested on suspicion of murder following the discovery of the body of a 37-year-old woman by ambulance paramedics at a property in Norton Crescent in the Coseley area of Dudley.

A police spokeswoman said officers were called by the ambulance service at 11.54am to the address where the woman's body was found. She is believed to have died from stab wounds.

The spokeswoman said a post-mortem examination was due to be carried out on the body and the scene remained sealed off yesterday afternoon for forensic work.

She said officers were connecting the incidents.

The motorway closure meant motorists travelling southbound were diverted on to the M6 Toll where they had to pay to use the road, causing angry flare-ups between drivers and toll booth attendants.

One motorist told The Birmingham Post: "There were signs warning there were delays - then that a section of the motorway was closed - all the way from Knutsford in Cheshire.

"But at no time did it say we would be forced to pay to be diverted when we got there.

"I went straight on to the toll road but then had to queue for about quarter of an hour at the Weeford toll plaza.

"I asked the attendant how drivers had been reacting and she said lots of people had been shouting at her."

Meanwhile, a busy section of the M11 reopened yesterday after it was shut following an accident, causing travel chaos.

Hundreds of travellers missed flights and others were trapped in traffic jams for up to four hours on Saturday after police closed a section of the motorway between London and Stansted Airport.

At one stage tailbacks on the motorway stretched for eight miles.

The chaos was made worse because the Stansted Express train from London to the airport was cancelled for track maintenance. ..SUPL:
