Detectives have launched a murder inquiry after a 36-year-old woman died in a suspected arson attack in Birmingham.

The woman, who has yet to be named, was pulled from the burning house in Speedwell Road, Edgbaston, early on Monday morning.

She was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead around 8.30am, West Midlands Police said.

A man and two other women are thought to have jumped from upstairs windows to escape the blaze.

The 34-year-old man and women, aged 55 and 23, remain in hospital although their injuries are not life threatening.

Chief Inspector Helen Kirkman, from Birmingham East local policing unit, spoke at the scene of the tragedy.

She said: "We are treating the fire as a suspected arson attack. I would like to appeal to anyone who saw anything this morning to come forward to help us with our inquiries.

"Speedwell Road would have been busy just before 7am and I would urge anyone who may have information, however insignificant it may seem, to come forward and speak to us."

Forensic scene investigators are working with the fire service to establish the circumstances, while police officers conduct house-to-house inquiries, police said.

Four ambulance crews and three rapid response vehicles attended the scene along with the Midlands Air Ambulance.
