A murder inquiry is under way after the body of a 60-year-old man was recovered from a Coventry canal.

West Midlands Police said two males, aged 16 and 22, had been arrested on suspicion of murder and remained in custody following the death on Sunday.

The victim, who had not been named, was discovered in the Coventry Canal at Grindle Road, Longford, at about 7.40pm.

Police were alerted and attended the scene along with the ambulance service, but despite receiving medical attention at the scene, the 60-year-old was pronounced dead.

A West Midlands Police spokeswoman said: "He has yet to be formally identified and a post-mortem examination is due to take place.

"Subsequent inquiries revealed that two men had been seen at the location where the victim entered the canal and who then left the scene."

Detectives want to hear from anyone who was in the area and was approached by two men who may have appeared intoxicated and approached people asking for cigarettes.

Two young girls were also seen rowing an inflatable dinghy along the canal and police believe they may have vital information.
