A car was hit by a train after it rolled down a hill on to a railway line.

The vehicle, an empty 4x4, went on to the track at North Rode in Congleton, Cheshire, where it was hit by a southbound train at around 6pm.

Cheshire Police said several passengers on the train, from Deansgate to Stoke-on-Trent, suffered minor injuries. Part of the train was derailed during the collision. A second train, from Bristol Temple Meads to Manchester Piccadilly, was also involved in the incident but is not believed to have hit the car.

Local rail services between Stockport and Stoke-on-Trent suffered delays as a result of the incident.
