The News of the World's case against Tommy Sheridan is based on smoke and mirrors not a smoking gun, the MSP told a jury yesterday.

During a passionate and emotional closing speech, the former Scottish Socialist Party leader repeatedly said he would have been an "idiot" to have cheated on his wife, visited a swingers' club and participated in orgies.

The firebrand politician also offered to strip off in court to prove he has excessive body hair, branded the tabloid "liars and hypocrites" and accused its journalists of endangering the life of his unborn daughter.

On day 21 of the sensational £200,000 defamation case, the Glasgow MSP said the former prostitute who sold her story to the Sunday newspaper was a victim in the "sordid affair".

Michael Jones QC, for the newspaper, said Mr Sheridan had a "monstrous ego".

The politician fought back tears as he challenged the veracity of the lurid allegations levelled against him.
