Birmingham MP Richard Burden has demanded justice for two Britons killed in the Gaza strip.

Mr Burden (Lab Northfield) said Israel should take "appropriate action" after a coroner's court found both men were unlawfully killed.

In a Commons motion, he said Britain should consider pursuing its own legal action against those allegedly responsible for the killings if Israel refused to do so.

Mr Burden is chairman of the Commons All-party Britain-Palestine Group.

He has sponsored a Commons motion following rulings earlier this month that James Miller and Tom Hurndall were "unlawfully killed" by Israeli soldiers in the Gaza Strip.

Mr Miller, an award-winning film-maker from Devon, was shot dead in 2003 at the age of 34, allegedly by a soldier in the Israeli Defence Forces.

The soldier alleged to have fired the fatal shot was disciplined by the Israeli army, but no prosecution was brought.

Tom Hurndall, a 22-year-old journalism and photography student from London, died in 2004 after he was hit in the forehead by a bullet.

He was in Gaza to act as a human shield with the International Solidarity Movement. An Israeli Defence Force soldier, Taysir Hayb, was convicted of manslaughter charges but Mr Hurndall's family say they believe people higher up the chain of command should also be held responsible.

Mr Burden said he called "on the UK Government to call for appropriate action by the Israeli authorities in the light of the verdicts, noting the coroner's advice that the UK may itself have the power to initiate proceedings should Israel fail to do so".

He was concerned about "Israel's failure properly to investigate other cases of international civilians and large numbers of Palestinian civilians killed by Israeli forces," he said.

The Commons motion was signed by five other MPs. ..SUPL:
