Birmingham MP John Hemming has conceded that the wrong cat has probably been returned to his mistress.

The “love triangle” politician told of his delight on Monday after his girlfriend Emily Cox was reunited with missing cat Beauty – stolen by Hemming's wife Christine in a burglary last September.

But doubts were raised by cat experts at the Cat Protection charity when several differences were highlighted.

And last night Mr Hemming conceded: “We have probably not got the right cat. We have not got to the bottom of it yet.

“This cat has had a home for the last year and we have been offered one of its kittens. So, we will probably take one of those.”

Sheila Bates, from Sparkhill, contacted Mr Hemming about the cat she found last November after seeing coverage of the sentencing of Christine Hemming for stealing Beauty from Ms Cox’s Moseley home.

Christine was ordered to perform 150 hours’ unpaid work and handed a suspended prison sentence at Birmingham Crown Court over the theft.
