Hundreds of motorists were left stranded after a major smash on the M6 in Warwickshire today (Friday).

Three lorries and a car were involved in the collision on the M6 southbound between Junctions 3 and 2 at Coventry at about 8.30am today.

The smash forced the closure of the M6, leaving almost three miles worth of traffic trapped on the motorway.

Highways Agency Traffic Officers were on the scene trying to work out how to get them off the motorway

The collision also led to another four miles worth of tailbacks on the M6 as traffic was filtered off the motorway at junction 3.

The northbound section was temporarily closed to allow the air ambulance to land to ferry casualties to hospital.

Collision investigators from Warwickshire Police were drafted in to examine the crash site. It was thought the motorway could be closed until at least lunchtime.

A Highways Agency spokesman said: “We would advise motorists to avoid this section of the network and to take alternative routes.”
