A man has been airlifted to hospital after his car collided with a bridge in Wolverhampton.

The accident happened at Old Heath Road shortly after 12:50pm on Monday.

The driver of the car suffered a serious head injury and was taken by air ambulance to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
 
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said:  “The driver of the vehicle was treated at the scene for a serious head injury.  Due to the nature of the injury the man was given an anaesthetic at the scene by the doctor.

“The man had been trapped in his vehicle for a period of time and had to be extricated from the car.

“He was immobilised using a spinal board and neck collar before being airlifted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham for further assessment and specialist treatment.”
