A Staffordshire mother and her five-year-old daughter are fighting for life in hospital after being hit by a car as they crossed the road.
The 28-year-old was walking with the young girl across Wolverhampton Road in Stafford just after 7pm on Tuesday when they were hit by a black Mitsubishi 4x4, travelling out of the city centre.
Yesterday they were both in a critical condition at University Hospital of North Staffordshire.
The girl suffered life-threatening head injuries while her mother has severe leg and pelvic injuries.
A Staffordshire Police spokesman said the pair, from Stafford, were in a life-threatening condition.
The 41-year-old male driver of the vehicle was arrested at the scene and released on police bail pending further inquiries.
A police spokesman said: "Officers are keen to speak to witnesses or anyone who saw the Mitsubishi prior to the collision."
