Birchfield Harrier Nathan Morgan and Jeanette Kwakye have missed out on a place in the Norwich Union Great Britain team for the world indoor championships in Moscow from March 10 to 12.

Morgan's last-ditch bid to reach the long jump qualifying mark of 8.10 metres ended in disappointment at a meeting in Greece.

Still troubled by a hip problem, Morgan won the competition but could manage no more than 7.93m. "He just can't generate enough power because of the niggles in his hips," his coach, Ted King, said. "He's disappointed to get so near yet so far.

"But there are positives for Nathan to take out of this. He did six rounds again. And he has done more competitions and jumps in this winter than he has done in any of the last four years.

"Now the priority is for the medical team to sort out the nerve problem in his hips so that he can take the positives pain-lessly into the summer."

Meanwhile, Kwakye has had to admit defeat in her fitness battle and has withdrawn from the team.

She pulled up during the 60m semi-finals with a thigh injury during the trials and was selected subject to proving her fitness. Kwakye said: "I'm really disappointed that I won't be going to Moscow. I wanted to get the best possible start to 2006 and I'm sure I could have progressed through the rounds." ..SUPL:
