A week after his British League victory in London, Jonathan Moore scored a narrow victory for Great Britain in the Norwich Union Under 23 International in Manchester on Saturday.

The Birchfield Harrier leapt 7.60 metres in the second round to win by nine centimetres from Roman Novotny (Czech Republic) with Frenchman Fabien Faucher (France) third with 7.45m. Moore's clubmate, Ryan James, placed fifth with 7.17m.

Dan Cossins snatched second place in the 200m in 21.42. The Birchfield Harrier followed this by running the second leg of the 4x100m relay, in which Great Britain stormed their way to an impressive victory in a time of 40.38 seconds, four-tenths of a second in front of France.

Solihull and Small Heath' s Tom Parsons shrugged off a failure at his opening height of 2.05m to take second place in the high jump with a successful third attempt clearance at 2.18m.

After Cannock and Stafford's AAA 5,000m silver medallist Tom Humphries had made most of the early running, Birmingham University steeplechaser Luke Gunn, running as a guest competitor, stretched away to win in the 3,000m flat race from AAA Under-23 5000m champion Scott Overall (Windsor, Slough, Eton and Hounslow)

Rebecca Peake who, like Gunn, hails from Derby, built on her confidenceboosting performance at the European Under 23 Championships by winning the women's shot put event with a second-round effort of 15.41m.

Rugby and Northampton's Gary White finished fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 15.56m into a slight headwind, in a competition won by France's Davy Manga with 16.07m.

Victories in sixteen of the individual events enabled Great Britain and Northern Ireland to defeat Spain and the Czech Republic but lose by seven points to France in the team competition.
