Birchfield Harriers won half-a-dozen titles at the Norwich Union AAA under-23 and junior championships during an action- packed weekend at Bedford.

Jonathan Moore bagged a brace of titles. On Saturday, the 21-year old won the triple jump with a distance of

15.75 metres but the former world youth champion did not attempt to conceal his frustration when his last-round effort, well beyond 16 metres, was awarded a red flag. Yesterday, Moore earned his second title of the weekend by leaping 7.47m to defeat clubmate Ryan James by half-adozen centimetres.

Commonwealth youth champion Amy Harris looked in a class of her own as she flew out to 6.30m to clinch the junior long jump gold medal.

Henrietta Paxton retained her women's under-23 long jump title by the slender margin of two centimetres from Lincoln's Jenny Pacey.

Former AAA junior champion Alex Van Der Merwe threw 1.66m further than previously to win the under-23 javelin with a massive personal best of 71.49m while Sam Herrington won the discus title with a throw of 50.86m.

Solihull and Small Heath Harrier Tom Parsons had to settle for the silver medal in the under-23 high jump despite a European Championships qualifying height of

2.20m. The title went to City of Sheffield's Martyn Bernard's championship-best performance of 2.24m.

Halesowen AC's AAA junior decathlon champion Oliver McNeillis added another title to his collection

with a 7.43m long jump. However, his hopes of a double were dashed yesterday after the UK junior 110m hurdles No 1 crashed out in mid-race. Tipton Harrier Darren Lewis finished third in 15.08 secs.

After a stride-for-stride battle, Birmingham University student Somto Eruchie snatched the junior 200m title in 21.02 seconds, a mere hundredth-of-a-second ahead of the pre-race favourite, Birchfield Harrier Julian Thomas, who is the secondfastest in Europe this season with his time of 20.85.

Birchfield Harrier Jo Blair was runner-up in the javelin with 45.49m while team-mate Dan Cossins was third in the under-23 200m in 21.43.

Dudley and Stourbridge's Jessica Leach achieved two personal bests, at 1.76m and 1.80m, to win a bronze medal in a dramatic junior high jump in which all three medallists achieved the European junior championships qualifying height.

Royal Sutton Coldfield's Laura Kenney was third in the 5,000m in 16:52.21. n Haile Gebrselassie was a runaway winner of the British 10km London run in 28 minutes 12 seconds.

The world record-holder for the distance was never under pressure as he coasted to victory around the capital's historic landmarks.

There were pre- event hopes that the Ethiopian star might challenge the UK allcomers' record of 27mins 25secs he set at the BUPA Great Manchester Run in May. But the former Olympic 10,000m gold medallist spreadeagled the field from the beginning and was never tested.

Robert Cheboror, of Kenya, was second in 29:06 with Thembalina Zola, of South Africa, clocking 29:36 for third place.
