Walsall manager Richard Money has promised he will not waste the cash the club receive for playing in a televised FA Cup first round match on Monday night. In fact he might not even spend it at all.

The Bescot side visit Macclesfield Town next week in a tie that sees League Two's top and bottom teams meet for a place in the second round.

But Money yesterday revealed that far from being anxious for the income a televised fixture brings, he has yet to spend the budget given him when he took over in the summer.

He claims the way his team have been playing has negated the need to recruit any more players and advised other managers to adopt a similar attitude.

"One thing I have learned, especially from [my time in] Sweden, is they get their squad together very early and they stay with it," Money said.

"What that does is breeds confidence in the players and faith and belief in what you are doing.

"The mentality of this country is let's bring another one in, let's bring another one in, let's get rid of this one, let's bring another one in. I am sorry, by and large, the ones you bring in - in many cases - are no better than the ones you have got."

The parallels with a previous regime are clear for all to see. Instead of turning Bescot's entrance into a revolving door a la Paul Merson, Money has opted to keep his squad small and tight.

"We have got a great spirit here and a terrific mentality at the minute and I am certainly not going to do anything to upset that," he said.

"If I genuinely feel there is somebody available who can improve our XI then I might look at it in January but apart from that I don't see much movement and neither do I see much need for any movement."
