Deliveries of Christmas cards were threatened today because of a strike by postal workers in a row over the suspension of 12 colleagues.

A picket line was set up outside the Burslem delivery office in Stoke-on-Trent after the walkout by more than 100 workers, which is set to continue until January 2.

The Communication Workers Union said the workers were suspended in September for "spurious" allegations of bullying.

The Royal Mail said 200 management volunteers were working at the office, adding: "We are determined to get the mail delivered in time for Christmas."
