A West Midlands Police officer has been seriously injured as she was hit by a car driven by a suspect she was attempting to arrest in London.

Catherine Corbett was taken to hospital by ambulance after suffering serious head injuries in west London shortly after 8am today.

Scotland Yard said the suspect, who was wanted in connection with a fraud inquiry, escaped in a blue Peugeot 207 later found abandoned nearby. Scotland Yard said they are treating the incident as attempted murder.

Ms Corbett, aged in her late 30s, was attempting to arrest the man outside the Sheraton Hotel, in Hayes, when she was injured, a police spokesman said.  The suspect got into the car and attempted to drive away, hitting the officer and then a vehicle before escaping. The car was later found dumped in Harlington Road, Hayes, less than a mile away.

The police officer was taken by ambulance to a north London hospital where she is being treated for serious head injuries.

A West Midlands Police spokeswoman said: "West Midlands Police officers are on their way down to London to liaise with the Metropolitan Police officers who are carrying out an investigation into the incident.

"The female officer was with a team from West Midlands Police in Hayes to effect an arrest in connection with an ongoing fraud investigation."
