A cultural event due to take place in Birmingham on Sunday has been shelved amid fears that more people than the organisers expected were planning to turn up.

The Bangla Mela 2006, which was due to take place at Mansfield Park in Aston, has been postponed on the advice of Birmingham City Council and West Midlands Police.

Organisers agreed to call it off after safety concerns were raised by the council's licensing section and police.

Pete Barrow, head of licensing at the council, said: " "It seems the Mela was likely to attract far more people than had originally been expected.

"The park is limited in size and this could have caused problems."
