Scotland manager Walter Smith wants Jackie McNamara on board for the Euro 2008 campaign despite the Wolverhampton Wanderers' utility player contemplating international retirement.

The 31-year-old McNamara could call time on his Scotland career after the ongoing World Cup qualification campaign.

But Smith said: "I've spoken with Jackie about his intentions but we are not talking about him being around for the next World Cup in 2010, we're talking about the next European Championship. I hope he's with us for that campaign so I'll try to talk him out of retiring if that's what he's thinking of.

"I see the bulk of my squad being OK for 2008 and if they are still the best players I will pick them. If they're playing for their club sides and doing well it doesn't matter if they are 36 or 37."
