Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Mick McCarthy today hailed the performances of veteran Michael Gray who has not just reinvented himself as a left winger but as a goalscorer too.

The former England international, also managed by McCarthy at Sunderland, waited 25 games before breaking Wolverhampton Wanderers duck but has now scored three in five including the eqaualiser in Tuesday night's win over Scunthorpe United.

Gray has spent nearly all of his career playing in defence, where he won three caps under Sven Goran Eriksson, but has been pressed into service further up the field in recent weeks.

His displays have been well received by McCarthy's whose Wolves side have now won four of their last six matches and now stand just a point outside the play off places with a game in hand.

"Micky’s best work when he was playing left back was always done offensively," McCarthy said. "He loves going forward and being on the attack. He is full or energy and full of enthusiasm, he is an example to young players. He is 33 and his enthusiasm for the game is still what it was when he was 23, It is remarkable.

"He has been there in terms of getting promoted. He is very experienced and is a good footballer. He has always been a good attacking full back. Him and George have had a good partnership. We are robust and solid with George [Elokobi] there and going forward we have good balance."

Gary Breen will miss tomorrow's visit from Queens Park Rangers but Jody Craddock and Stephen Elliott will come back into contention.
