Fifa have opened disciplinary proceedings against Italy's Marco Materazzi after the incident that led to France captain Zinedine Zidane being sent off in Sunday's World Cup final in Berlin.

Football's world governing body have responded following Zidane's televised inter-view on Wednesday night, in which he accused Materazzi of insulting his mother and sister during the match Zidane, playing in his final match before retirement, headbutted Materazzi in the chest and was sent off. Fifa had already announced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Zidane has been invited to provide a written statement by Tuesday. Materazzi will then be given a chance to respond before both players are called to a face-to-face hearing of the disciplinary committee in Zurich on July 20. n Roberto Donadoni has been charged with leading world champions Italy into Euro 2008 after being named coach.

Donadoni, who represented his country with great distinction as a player, succeeds Marcello Lippi in the role.

Lippi resigned on Tuesday after managing Italy to World Cup triumph with a penalty shoot-out defeat of France.
