A law firm that is steeped in the history of Birmingham is looking at a potential merger that will elevate it into the country’s top 75 practices.
Martineau, which can trace its history back to 1828 in the city, is in talks with Sprecher Grier Halberstam over a tie-up that would boost turnover to more than £30 million.
Sprecher Grier Halberstam employs 90 people at its Fenchurch Street office in London and Martineau’s senior partner Andrew Whitehead said the driving force for a possible merger was to grow the Birmingham firm’s presence in the capital.
“We want to have a bigger presence in London where we currently have an office with about 15 staff,” he said.
“We need more critical mass and a better platform for growth in London.
“What we are certain about is that we are a Birmingham law firm and always will be – whatever we end up with, our centre will always be in Birmingham.
“We know how important Birmingham is to the firm and our clients but we need to develop our London platform.”
