West Midlands manufacturing has been praised by a Government minister as part of the “unsung success of our whole economy”.
Speaking at the CBI’s West Midlands Summer Banquet, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Business and Competitiveness Baroness Shriti Vadera also highlighted the importance of the New Street Station development and the expansion of Birmingham Airport.
“Manufacturing is still the single largest sector in the West Midlands economy where it employs 360,000 people and generates an annual turnover of £45 billion.
“So with apologies to Mark Twain - the reports of UK manufacturing’s decline have been grossly exaggerated.
“It is in fact the unsung success of our whole economy.”
Baroness Vadera also assured the West Midlands business community of the Government’s commitment to infrastructure projects in the region. In a separate engagement, Baroness Vadera launched the West Midlands Women’s Enterprise Centre of Expertise at the Custard Factory in Digbeth.
