A 34-year-old man is in a stable condition after suffering a gunshot wound outside a pub in the Pensnett area of Dudley.
Police were alerted to the incident, which is thought to have happened near the Poets Corner, on Pensnett High Street, after the victim attended a hospital with a leg wound.
Detective Inspector Gary Dring, of West Midlands Police, said officers are in the early stages of their investigation and sealed off an area outside the pub for forensic examination.
The officer said: "Pensnett High Street is a busy road at any time of day and so we are sure there must have been people passing by who may have seen the offender arrive or leave the scene.
"We have no known motive at this stage of enquiries, but we do have reason to believe that this was an isolated incident and there is no threat to local residents."
