A man has been sectioned after two women suffered knife wounds, police said.
Officers were called to Lichfield Cathedral in Staffordshire before 5pm on Tuesday, after reports a 34-year-old woman had been stabbed in the buttock.
A 63-year-old local woman received a slight knife injury to her left arm in a nearby footpath known as The Windings, Staffordshire Police said. A 42-year-old man from Erdington was arrested and sectioned under the Mental Health Act.
A police spokesman said: “The man was arrested in Bulldog Lane within six minutes of the incident.
“He was taken into custody at Burton police station and sectioned under the Mental Health Act.”
The women were taken by ambulance to the minor injuries unit at Good Hope Hospital, Sutton Coldfield, where they were treated and later discharged.
Lichfield neighbourhood policing unit commander, Inspector Jon Staite described it as an “isolated incident”.
The Very Reverend Adrian Dorber, Dean of Lichfield Cathedral, said: “This was a very distressing incident and we are only too grateful that prompt action by our verging staff and Staffordshire Police prevented it from becoming any worse.”
