A man prowled the streets of a Staffordshire town in his car in the early hours of the morning looking for girls who would have sex with him, a jury was told.

Abdul Matalid (32) visited Rugeley from Birmingham and cruised the streets to find any young girls for sex, Stafford Crown Court heard.

Simon Drew, prosecuting, said three girls were walking home at 2.30am when a silver BMW approached them.

"They waved to try to gain the attention of the driver or passenger. The car turned round and there was a fair amount of chatting. The defendant asked for, and got, the telephone number of one of the girls. She told him she was 17 but that was not true. She was, in fact, 14.

Mr Drew added: "He was trying to persuade her to go upstairs with him to have sex. She refused but he was not prepared to take 'no' for an answer."

Matalid, of Hamstead Road, Great Barr, Birmingham, pleaded not guilty to inciting a girl under 16 to have sexual intercourse. The trial continues.
