A man accused of strangling a ten-year-old girl and plotting to eat her allowed investigators to search his flat, then confessed to the killing, an FBI agent said.

Agent Craig Overby said he spotted clothing in a plastic tub in a bedroom cupboard and asked Kevin Underwood where the girl was. Overby said the man replied: "She's in there. I hit her and chopped her up."

Jamie Bolin's body was found nearly decapitated in Underwood's flat, investigators said. A judge in Purcell, Oklahoma, ruled Underwood would be tried for first-degree murder and granted a request by the defence for a gagging order banning lawyers and law enforcement discussing the case.

Prosecutors said they would seek the death penalty for Underwood (26) who lived in the same complex as the girl. She was reported missing on April 12 after failing to return from the library.

After Underwood's arrest, police and prosecutors said he raped the girl's corpse.
