A man was killed by a police car as the officers answered a 999 call in Staffordshire.

The 25-year-old was knocked down while walking in the Hanley area of Stoke-on-Trent as police answered a 999 call.

He was taken to hospital but pronounced dead on arrival at about 8pm on Saturday. The two policemen in the car were not hurt.

An investigation is to be launched by the Independent Police Complaints Commission. A Staffordshire Police spokeswoman said: "A police vehicle was responding to an emergency call and was travelling along Potteries Way near the junction with Bucknall New Road in Hanley when it was in collision with a pedestrian.

"The two male police officers were uninjured but extremely shocked by the incident.

"The matter has been voluntarily referred to the commission."
