A man has been arrested after shots were fired at a police car in Birmingham.

The incident took place in Handsworth at around midnight on Sunday night, after a police traffic car followed a Vauxhall Astra from the Lozells area which had failed to stop.

When the Astra was then involved in a crash, its four occupants got out and shots were discharged at the police car before they ran off, officers said.

A 19-year-old man was arrested shortly afterwards.  Forensics experts are examining the scene at the junction of College Road and Cornwall Road. No officers were injured in the incident and the police car was not damaged.
