A man died after getting a splinter in his eye when he fell into a bush during a night out.
The 26-year-old was waiting for a taxi with a group of five friends and workmates on Sunday, June 5 after an evening spent in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent.
The incident happened on the corner of Hope Street and Newhall Street at about 2am.
A spokesman for Staffordshire Police Force said one of the group had pushed the man over a low wall and he fell into a bush. A splinter from the bush became lodged in one of his eyes.
The man, from Mere, was taken to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire for treatment and on Wednesday surgeons performed an operation to remove the splinter.
During the days following his operation the man's condition deteriorated and he died at around 8pm on Monday.
The spokesman said the group had been questioned but no arrests had been made.
"We are working to establish circumstances that led to his injury and we are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward."
A post mortem will take place today.
