A 46-year-old delivery driver has appeared in court in Nuneaton charged with the child abduction and rape of a 14-year-old girl who he allegedly groomed for more than a year on the internet.
Stephen Carter, of Deepdale Drive, Carlisle, was arrested last Thursday, the day after the girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had disappeared from her home in north Warwickshire.
He appeared at Nuneaton Magistrates' Court charged with grooming a girl under 16, the taking of a child so as to remove her from the person having legal control and with the rape of a girl aged 14.
The 46-year-old spoke only to confirm his name and address. No application for bail was made and he was remanded in custody until June 16 when he will appear at Warwick Crown Court for a preliminary hearing.
The girl's disappearance last Wednesday sparked an extensive police search. She was found the next day at an address in Cumbria.
A 44-year-old man, also from Carlisle, who was arrested on suspicion of child abduction, has been released on bail pending further inquiries.
