A 24-year-old man is to appear in court charged with the murder of an Indian woman in Handsworth, Birmingham.

University of Wolverhampton student Samrajyo Jyothirmai Vempala, 23, who was in the UK on a study visa, was found dead in a house in the area. She was studying for a postgraduate degree in health sciences.

A post-mortem showed she died from head injuries. The accused will appear before magistrates in Birmingham on Friday.

The university is sending a representative to meet the family of the deceased student in Vijaywada, India.

Expressing the sympathies to Jyothirmai's family, the university said in a statement: "Feedback from fellow students and tutors indicate that she (Jyothirmai) was a very bright and enthusiastic student."
