A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman in her 50s was found dead in Shropshire.

West Mercia Police said the victim, who has not been named, was found at a property in the village of Hanwood, near Shrewsbury, Shropshire, at about 6.40pm on Tuesday.

Officers attended the address in Caradoc View, which was cordoned off as forensic experts examined the scene, following reports of concern for the occupant.

Detective Chief Inspector Neil Jamieson, who is leading the investigation, said a man in his 50s was arrested in Shrewsbury at around 5am on Wednesday.

The officer said: "Following the discovery of the deceased, a number of rapid lines of inquiry led to the arrest of a man on suspicion of murder a few hours later.

"A Home Office pathologist is due to carry out a post-mortem examination on the victim in the coming days to establish a cause of death."

Anyone who saw or heard suspicious behaviour at or near the property before about 3pm on Tuesday is urged to contact police on 0300 333 3000.
