A teenager is in custody after a Birmingham woman, thought to be his mother, died of suspected stab wounds.

Police were called to an address in Lanchester Way in Castle Bromwich, Birmingham, shortly after 3am on Monday.

Patricia Fort, 57, had suffered suspected stab wounds and was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead shortly afterwards, according to West Midlands Police.

An 18-year-old man was arrested and is currently in custody in connection with the death.

Police would not comment on reports that the man in custody is the dead woman's son.

Neighbours said the woman and her son had lived at the address for more than 15 years but were rarely seen.

Police are awaiting the results of a post-mortem and have not yet named the woman.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said the woman was treated at the scene of the incident and transferred to Heartlands Hospital while ambulance staff continued emergency treatment in the ambulance.

An ambulance service spokesman said: "The patient was met at the hospital by a medical team, but unfortunately, despite the best efforts of ambulance crews and hospital staff, nothing could be done to save her and she was confirmed dead shortly after arrival at hospital."
