A man arrested on suspicion of repeatedly stabbing a two-month-old baby boy in Birmingham has been detained under the Mental Health Act, police said.

The baby, who was left with life-threatening internal injuries, remains in a "critical condition" but was "making good progress towards recovery", a West Midlands police spokesman said.

His condition has stabilised following emergency surgery.

The 37-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder at a house on Alfred Road in the Handsworth area of Birmingham around 10.45pm on Friday.

He was taken into custody and questioned but the police spokesman said he had "now been detained under the Mental Health Act at a hospital facility".
