A 24-year-old man is due to appear in court today charged with murder in connection with a shooting outside a hair salon.

West Midlands Police said the man, who was detained at an undisclosed location on Friday, would appear before magistrates in Birmingham this morning accused of killing Paul Francis.

Mr Francis, aged 29, was shot dead and a second man, Nathaniel Ellis, was wounded in the incident in Lozells Road, Newtown, Birmingham, on August 27.

Mr Ellis, aged 24, is the elder brother of Charlene Ellis, one of two teenagers who were murdered outside a New Year's party in nearby Aston in 2003.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said two other men, aged 24 and 39, arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender had both been released without charge.

Detectives have yet to comment on whether the shooting on August 27 was gang-related.

The murder followed a melee involving 30 to 40 people, which happened at about 2.30pm as football fans headed to the nearby Villa Park stadium.
