Benfica striker Ariza Makukula has turned down an offer from West Bromwich Albion.

The 27-year-old, who has played for nine clubs in 10 years, was reportedly due to sign for the Baggies on loan after the two clubs reached an agreement.

However, Makukula revealed he was not happy with their offer.

"There was an agreement between West Bromwich and Benfica," he told Portuguese website Mais Futebol. "But I went to the club and I didn't like their offer.

"The coach of the club is nice, the organisation good, but I don't think it is a project for me."

The Portugal international, who is of Congolese descent, only joined Benfica a year ago in a £3million deal from Sevilla.

Benfica signed Makukula on the strength of a successful loan spell at Maritimo, where he scored seven goals in 13 appearances, but he has failed to reproduce the same kind of form.

Makukula, who has a contract until 2012 at Benfica, is still resigned to leaving the Portuguese giants this month, having not featured at all for them in the league.

"It's certain that I will leave Benfica," he added. "I will be sent on loan or sold.  It's true that I liked the idea of West Bromwich, but when I arrived there it was nothing like what I had been told.

"At this moment I am a Benfica player, but it's certain that I'm going to leave."
