A motorist has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving after a car overturned at a busy traffic island in Birmingham on Friday morning.

Morning commuters faced rush-hour delays when the vehicle hit a set of traffic lights at the junction of Heartlands Parkway and Bromford Lane, underneath the M6.

Fort Parkway and Heartlands Parkway were closed both ways following the incident, which happened shortly after 3.30am.

A male passenger in the vehicle suffered a head injury and was taken to hospital, but his condition is not thought to be life threatening.

The driver suffered minor injuries and both men were given first aid at the scene by fire fighters from Ward End station.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said a 23-year-old man from Northampton has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving and dangerous driving.
