Police say the northbound carriageway of the M6 between junctions 6 & 7 in Birmingham has reopened, following a major accident at 6am.

The southbound carriageway, however, will remain closed until at least 7pm to allow resurfacing work to be carried out.

The closure followed an collision on the northbound carriageway between two heavy goods vehicles, one of which was foreign registered. 

An HGV driver from Holland was arrested by officers from the Central Motorway Police Group on suspicion of dangerous driving and was being interviewed. 

Another driver, a male in his 40s from the Preston area, was seriously hurt and was airlifted to Selly Oak hospital by police helicopter.
